2001 Web Design Process

As a Digital Media Art Director I was responsible for authoring team processes, communicating to clients what, how and when we’d deliver on their requests. It was such a frontier time to be leading multimedia development and online development that there weren’t any really good examples of how people were doing good WebDesignProcess.

Since that day as a multimedia Art Director and web designer soooo much has changed. I was just reading about the Spotify team structures, the different mediums that have to develop in and the phenomenal growth they have had over the last 4 – 5 years.

I like to think that when we set up these revolutionary processes we were efficient and I know for sure before all the new 21 st century agile, lean or systems thinking buzz words we were all about innovative value for our customers.

Agile Glossary – a central resource for learning all things agile, lean and scrum

Agile is an umbrella term to describe a movement predominately living in software development industries, AND it is a grouping of practices plus a culture supported by a combination of tools that create the opportunity to better generate value – be that at the person, product or business level.

Areas of agile include;

  • Agile Development is vernacular often referring to particularly software development, Test Driven Development (TDD) practices or Extreme Programming (XP)
  • Agile Methodology can first be understood by initially reviewing the New New Product Development Game (HBR), the Agile Manifesto, the Scrum Framework and XP history
  • Scrum Agile is another ‘colloquial combination of keywords used by newbies learning about the Agile methodology and the Scrum process that spawned from the creators of the Agile Manifesto.

Great Agile Scrum Delivery Management Tools

The right tool for the right job? Like scrum make it agnostic fluid and save me time, time, time.

Normally I don’t gush over products but I love anything that reduces the time it takes me to do anything – so below are the best in their special areas.

Pivotal Tracker is brilliant. We used it with internationally distributed teams. Your ability to do sprints, be agile needs to be quite slim – however; trust the product to manage your cycles for you, don’t sweat the old school fat that you may have previously known. The Pivotal guys are really quite clever, they have great experience and understanding in the scrum, xp arenas. So working with a Ruby/Rails TDD team that is truly self organising means you don’t need the below large suite.

For shared services departments with multi-channel product distribution we’re using the atlassian suite – seamless and continuous communication from confluence to jira to greenhopper to fisheye/crucible to bamboo (with SOAPUI integration) to dare i say it – HPQC – for the old school testers, and back again to do it all over again.

The differences are obvious in the pricing models. I do frown a bit at Atlassians training prices for their products.
